چکیده

We report on a demonstration prototype module created to explore the viability of using microscale solar cells combined with microlens array concentrators to create a thin, flat-plate concentrator module with a relatively large acceptance angle for use with coarse two-axis tracking systems designed for flat-plate, one-sun modules. The demonstration module was comprised of an array of 216 cell/microlens units and was manufactured using standard tools common to the integrated circuit, microelectromechanical system (MEMS), and electronics assembly industries. The module demonstrated an acceptance angle of ±4°, an optical concentration level of 36X, and a focal depth of 13.3 mm. The acceptance angle and focal depth of the system successfully demonstrated adequate performance for integration into a system using a coarse two-axis tracker for flatplate modules. To fully take advantage of this system approach, significant future work is required to reduce optical losses, increase cell and module efficiency, reduce the focal length to approximately 5 mm, and increase the concentration level to greater than 100X while maintaining an acceptance angle of at least ±2°. Index Terms — photovoltaic cells, solar energy, silicon solar system.

High accuracy dual lens transmittance measurements.

We show how to determine the transmittance of short focal length lenses (f approximately 19 mm and f approximately 2 5 mm, in this case) with a combined uncertainty of 3 parts in 10(4) or better by measuring transmittances of lens pairs of a set of three or more lenses with the same nominal focal length. Uncertainties are minimized by optimizing the radiometric design of the setup and the measu...

The effect of focal spot size on the spatial resolution of variable resolution X-ray CT scanner

Background: A variable resolution X-ray (VRX) CT scanner provides a great increase in the spatial resolution. In VRX CT scanners, the spatial resolution of the system and its field of view (FOV) can be changed according to the object size. One of the main factors that limit the spatial resolution of VRX CT scanner is the effect of the X-ray focal spot. Materials and Methods: A theoreti...

Study on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Laser Welded Joints of 1.7225 Steel

The aim of the present study is to investigate the mechanical and microstructural properties of 1.7225 steel in laser welding process using Nd:YAG pulsed laser device and then to determine the optimal focal length relative to the part in the welding area. After welding, microstructural characterization, microhardness and tensile tests were performed. Evaluations showed that the optimal focal le...

Dynamic Analysis of Embankments Reinforced with Micro-Piles

Application of micro-piles to stabilize unstable slopes has been widely considered in recent years. A micro-pile is a small-diameter (typically less than 300 mm), drilled, and grouted as non-displacement pile that is typically reinforced. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the influence of the micro-pile group on increasing safety factor as well as finding the optimum position of m...
